이번 공간프로젝트에서 오종은 그의 대표 연작 중 하나인 <방 드로잉>의 신작을 선보인다. 그는 초기 <방 드로잉> 연작에서 외부 장소나 풍경을 전시실로 가져오거나 이를 단순화시키는 과정에서 발견되는 벽의 결함들을 지워가며 작품을 구성했다. 그리고 점차 이 흔적을 작업의 출발점으로 삼거나 소재가 되는 공간의 특정 형태를 설치물로 구현함으로써 전시장소가 작품의 일부가 되는 최근 <방 드로잉> 작업에 이르렀다. 이번 전시에 소개하는 <방 드로잉 (눈금) #1>은 미술관의 건축물, 전시실 안팎의 구조와 환경적 특질을 재료로 특정 시간대에 작가와 공간 사이에 일어난 대화의 결과물이다. 그간 재료와 도구의 경계를 허물어 온 작가는 이번 전시에 평소 작품 제작에 필수 도구인 ‘접이식 눈금자’를 작업화 하였다. 이 도구를 사용하여 미술관의 창문, 계단, 모서리와 같이 작가에게 흥미로운 건축 지점을 측정하고 이를 조형화하여 전시실 안팎으로 공간을 구성해 나갈 예정이다. 

작가의 상상력으로 재해석된 공간 탐구의 결과물을 관람객이 직접 몸을 움직여 경험하게 함으로써, 작가는 우리에게 어디에나 있는 공간에 대한 새로운 무의식, 시선, 감각 등을 환기시킨다. 작품의 중요한 요소로 작용하는 관객의 움직임은 전시장소와 작품, 그리고 우리 사이에 각기 다른 작품의 다양한 의미를 생성할 것이다.

For this spatial project, the artist presents one of his representative works, Room Drawing. At the beginning of the Room Drawing series, he made works by erasing flaws found in the process of bringing or simplifying places or landscapes to the gallery space. Over time, he has developed the incorporation of the gallery space as a part of Room Drawing by taking these traces as a starting point for his work, or realizing the installation using particular forms of the space as raw materials. Room Drawing(graduation) #1 is the result of dialogues that took place between the artist and the space at a certain time, using the architectural elements of the museum, the interior and exterior structures of the gallery space, and features of the environment. Having worked to break down the boundary between material and tool, for this exhibition, the artist makes a work of art out of a "folding ruler", an essential tool for making works. Using this tool, he will measure architecturally interesting points such as windows, stairs, and corners of the museum and these into forms to be installed inside and outside of the gallery space.

In this way, with the movements of their bodies, the audience experience a space which is the outcome of the artist's imaginative reinterpretation. Jong Oh invokes new unconsciousness, perception, and a sense of the space that surround us. The movement of the audience, which is an essential part of the works, creates another meaning among the gallery space, the works, and ourselves.

장소⑵ 3층 창가

3층의 난간에서 창가를 바라보면, 직각을 그리며 떨어지는 가는 선을 발견할 수 있다. 이 선은 미술관 창문의 오른쪽 모서리와 왼쪽 모서리로부터 출발하여, 허공의 중심에서 수직으로 낙하하기 시작한다. 그 끝에 매달린 작은 추는 1층의 관람자들 머리 바로 위에 멈춘다.
